If you want the short version: remove the easiest cues today, learn to sit through one urge tomorrow, and decide now what you will do after the first slip. Everything else on this site is detail on those three moves.

Day one: the room and the phone#

Charge the phone outside the bedroom tonight. Put a filter on every device you own while you are calm. Neither takes willpower; both remove most of the cues before they arrive.

Day two: one urge, watched#

When the pull comes, open the page marked "Right now" and stay with it for ninety seconds. That is urge surfing, and one honest attempt teaches more than a month of reading.

Before the first slip: the plan#

Decide now, in writing, what you will do after a slip. Who you will tell, what you will write down, where the phone will sleep that night. The plan is what turns a slip into information instead of a relapse.

Then, the path#

Start the path at lesson one and read one a day. It is short on purpose.

Terms used

  • Cue

Whatever starts the loop: a feeling, a time, a place, a screen. Rarely sexual; usually a state you want to leave.

  • Urge surfing

Staying with an urge, attending to it in the body and breathing, until it peaks and passes on its own.

  • Slip versus relapse

A slip is one event. A relapse is the decision, usually made in shame afterwards, to stop trying. Keeping them apart is a skill.
